7 skills of highly effective people from Stephen Covey

In order to become a successful person, first of all, it is necessary to become an effective person. For this you need to develop certain qualities in yourself, of which there is quite a lot. And to determine the degree of importance is quite difficult. Nevertheless, there are people who not only achieved great results in their lives, but also want to share their experiences with others. 

One of these people is Stephen Covey - American teacher and consultant on organizational management, leadership and life management. Author of several works on the subject of personal effectiveness. 

In 2011, Time magazine called his book "The 7 Skills of Highly Effective People" one of the most influential in business.

In his work, the author in an accessible abstract form reveals the essence of these 7 skills. Stephen Covey defines all skills with three parameters: 1. Knowledge of what to do and for what purpose? 2. Skill: how to do? 3. Desire to do. 

In order to successfully develop skills, you must use all three parameters. First of all, it is necessary to study the theory, then learn how to put it into practice and understand the motivation to use. The first three skills that will be discussed, the author refers to the inner world of man. They are the basis of character. The following three skills are attributed to external effectiveness. And the final - the seventh - combines all previous skills.

Skill 1. Be proactive

Proactiveness is the freedom to choose a person. Everyone is able to make a choice and be responsible for their actions. Proactivity is a way of life when a person does not react to the influence of external factors, and he himself is the initiator of influences. He chooses his actions, outpacing influence on himself. Being proactive means that a person has learned his inner values ​​and goals, and acts in accordance with his life principles, shaping conditions and circumstances. Successful is the person who does not spend time talking and does not believe that the forces "from above" can affect life. He solves problems, shows perseverance and initiative. A successful person knows that for changes in the outside world it is necessary to change something in the inside.


Skill 2. The ability to see the ultimate goal

This skill involves creating and imagining what a person wants to achieve. The builder begins with the project, the composer writes down on paper the sounds that exist in his imagination. The writer has in front of an approximate sketch of the future book. If a person is aware of his actions, he will get a clear idea of where to go next. He will form his own system of values, which will guide all his actions and deeds. This can be considered a vital "guiding star", which will point the way to the intended goal. Clearly see the ultimate goal - it is a pledge and the basis of efficiency. 

Skill 3. First do urgent things.

Management is, first of all, diligence, discipline and the implementation of steps to the intended goal. However, we must remember that the main thing is to solve key problems. A person who wants to be effective must manage his time. Learn to focus on the main issues. And all the irrelevant to push into the background. It is necessary to understand the difference between urgent and important. All steps to the goal are important, but urgent - what needs to be done now, this minute, without shelving. Attention must also be paid to maintaining a balance between the desired end result and the resources available. Evaluate the possibilities: what resources and how many people have at the moment. A sober look at the situation will help open new perspectives and opportunities.

Skill 4. Thinking "Your victory is my victory"

This skill can be described as a special intellectual state of mind. It is primarily aimed at finding mutually beneficial solutions. Understanding that for success and common victory, cooperation between people is necessary. Otherwise everyone can lose. If one side does not make compromises, then Covey thinks that it is better to break the problematic relationship. And it is desirable to do this at the very beginning. Relations on mutual understanding and mutually beneficial conditions are difficult to build, but realistic. To do this, you must be persistent in solving tasks. At the same time pay attention to the interests and needs of team members. A successful person must form a conviction that the benefits of peace will be enough for everyone.


Skill 5. Understand first, to be understood later

Oddly enough, the best ideas arise not from those who speak well, but from those who are able to listen well. In order to become a highly effective person, Stephen Covey advises to learn and use empathic listening skills. Learn to listen and understand another person. In this case, you should not immediately voice your position. Of course, this does not mean that we must fully agree. It is important to seek to understand your interlocutor, both in heart and mind. When both parties understand each other, they can always find a common language and come to a mutual solution. 

Skill 6. Achieve Synergy

Synergy is the process of forming a creative team of like-minded people, the state of cohesion in the team. When the main place is given to relations between people, cohesion and unity can become something more important than the activities of individuals. At the same time joint solutions are more effective than individual ones. Synergy can manifest its main advantages in the most difficult and critical situations. 

Skill 7. Be able to "sharpen the saw"

It can be understood by illustrating with an example: Imagine a person who is trying to cut a tree for several hours with a blunt saw. But when he is advised to sharpen the saw in order to work more efficiently, he replies that there is no time for that. After all, he needs to cut! Admit that this is absurd. The essence of this skill is that it is necessary to regularly update and improve the physical, spiritual, intellectual and socio-emotional qualities of your personality. This is the main resource of each person.
