How not to get lost in the forest and what to do if you lose your way

When going on a hike, always remember that the forest harbors not only the charms of nature, but also dangers. Therefore, having planned such an event, be sure to take our advice into account
Going to the forest is an exciting activity. Forest thicket, majestic tops of perennial trees, lawns, forest inhabitants attract travelers, both experienced and beginners. However, euphoria from staying in the forest can be a real test if you get lost.
How to prepare for a hike in the forest and what to do if you understand that you are lost, we will tell in this article.
How to prepare for the forthcoming campaign?
Learn the terrain. As the saying goes: "Without knowing the ford, do not poke yourself into the water." It is rather risky to immediately go to the dense forest without first getting acquainted with the upcoming route. Therefore, first you need to study the map and scout the situation from those who have already traveled so. In addition, it is necessary to find out which animals and vegetation prevail wherever you are going.

Warn the family and friends about the upcoming event. It will be best if you leave them a map with the upcoming route, or at least notify where and when you are going to. In case you will not be long, relatives and friends will score an alarm and turn to the rescuers.
Take on the campaign rescue and protective attributes. Such attributes include: knife, camping hatchet, coal, rope, matches (waterproof), sleeping bag (blanket), whistle, first-aid kit, compass . Before the hike, be sure to practice correctly and effectively use all of the above items, so that in case of unforeseen circumstances you could skillfully master them.

Do not forget about the means of communication. Even if you decided to make yourself a one-on-one with nature, the mobile phone should still be taken, and best of all - together with an additional battery. If the journey is a long one, with the lack of mobile communication, you should buy a satellite communicator called "SPOT Messenger", which allows you to contact the rescue services at any time.
What if you get lost?
Leave the panic! If you understand that you have lost your way, it is very important to remain calm. In the panic, precautions are forgotten, and the likelihood of finding the best way out of the situation is reduced. Once in this situation, take a deep breath, relax, sit down and look around.
Find your bearings in space. Mark the place where you are, zero point. This can be done with the help of any object that will stand out in the forest: a red cloth, a pile of folded stones, an object of bright clothes. Next, determine the sides of the world. This can be done either with a compass, or orientated by the sun (the sun rises in the east, and sets in the west).

Be in one place. In this case, the chances that you will be found will rise. In addition, you will save energy. Therefore, stay on the spot and report your situation to rescuers using a satellite communicator or mobile phone. If you are on a sunny lawn, go into the tent and, contrary to desire, do not take off your clothes, so that later you can not fight with sunburn.
Uncook the fire. Obistroy place for fire, collect firewood (brushwood) and explore the fire before dark. Be sure to use the coal taken with you, which will allow you to keep heat in the fire for a long time. To make the fire safe, it is necessary to make a fringe (outline the circle) in advance for the fire. Otherwise, dry needles and leaves on the ground can cause uncontrolled spread of flame.

Do it so that you will be heard and noticed. Whistles, make noise, scream. If possible, make sure that you are noticed from a height. To do this, you can build three heaps of stones or leaves in a triangular shape, which means a distress signal. In the same way, you can kindle three bonfires. Also, the signal SOS can be three shots or whistle.
Study the environment. Of course, it is not necessary to go far from the zero point, however, it is better to study the nearby terrain. You can find some useful things that will be useful to you or a landmark that will tell you the information about your location.
Try to find a source of water near by. Of course, the chance to find a source, not far from the place designated by you, is small. But if you're lucky, the chances of a safer stay in the forest will improve. The source of water in the forest can be a lake or a spring. Pay attention to the birds. They often fly to where there is water. Of course, the forest water in its composition may be far from filtered, but it is better to use it than to expose yourself to the risk of suffering from dehydration. If it's not lucky to find water, and the stocks are coming to an end, collect the dew in the tank. The process is painstaking, but, as they say: "On bezrybe and cancer fish."
Clear the water extracted in the forest. Produced water should be boiled for at least five minutes on fire.
Find or build a shelter. To protect yourself from unfavorable weather conditions (wind, sun, rain, snow), shelter is simply necessary. As a refuge, you can use a tree that is slightly squinted. On its sides it is possible to fold branches in an A-shaped way and sprinkle them with leaves. A good shelter may be a cave. Only at first it is necessary to be convinced that in it does not live a bear or other forest living creature. In winter weather, you can build a shelter of snow. In either of these cases, it is important that you remain prominent.
Try to find food. The most important rule is that it must be safe! If there is a lake nearby, you can try to catch fish. Also, maybe you'll be lucky enough to find strawberries. But only you must be 100% sure that this is it. Other berries or mushrooms to eat is not recommended. If the situation with food is critical, you can fry a couple of grasshoppers at the stake. Of course, this seems disgusting, but in them there are nutrients and substances that are safe for humans, which will help survive before the arrival of rescuers.
When going on a hike, always remember that the forest harbors not only the charms of nature, but also dangers. Therefore, having planned such an event, be sure to take our advice into service. Then a hike into the forest thicket will become a fascinating journey, which will then be reminisced for a long time by beautiful photographs and acquired experience.
